Netflix is adapting In the Likely Event, a novel by Fourth Wing author Rebecca Yarros, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal.

The film, adapted to the screen by Lindsey Ferrentino — one of five movies she’s writing for the streaming giant — is a romance between a U.S. soldier, Nate, and a congressional aide, Izzy, set against the war in Afghanistan. The book was first published in August 2023.

In the Likely Event will be overseen by Brian Williams for Dylan Clark Productions and by Kira Cousineau for Netflix. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with Dylan Clark Productions and Netflix to bring In the Likely Event to life,” Yarros said. “It’s such a special book to me and I can’t wait to see Nate and Izzy brought to the screen by such a thoughtful and passionate team of creators.”

Ferrentino recently talked to THR about her vast slate of projects: “It’s a huge responsibility to live up to the ferocity of Rebecca Yarros’ fandom and a challenge I’m excited for. Like all of Rebecca’s books it is an epic, sweeping story and what Rebecca does so well is build these incredibly complicated worlds.”

She continued: “This is my fifth project with Netflix — which has been a wonderfully supportive home for me, letting me develop so many projects there. And with each project I’ve written for them, they’ve allowed me to write on a bigger canvas. The Rebecca Yarros book is definitely the biggest scale story I’ve adapted and am deeply grateful for the opportunity.”

American author Yarros is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today best-selling author of over 15 novels. The 43-year-old first began writing when her husband was deployed in Afghanistan.

Fantasy story Fourth Wing, which became a viral phenomenon on social media and is getting a TV adaptation at Amazon, made her a global name with over three million copies sold across the world. Its sequel, Iron Flame, is only the second book in the Empyrean series, a planned five-book series.

Ferrentino, whose play with Adrien Brody The Fear of 13 is currently running on London’s West End, also recently revealed to THR a project in the works at Sony about the Playboy empire and a movie she is directing for Netflix called Amy and the Orphans.

Cast and crew details for In the Likely Event are yet to be released.
