Selena Gomez fans have been left gobsmacked by her new film after viewers were left baffled by a viral sex change clip performed as a song.
New musical crime thriller Emilia Pérez has already been tipped for Oscars after receiving a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. But fans watching the Netflix film on the streamer have given mixed reviews of the movie, which was written and directed by Jacques Audiard.
The wild genre-defying "fever dream" finds Zoe Saldaña's lawyer Rita assisting an escaped Mexican cartel leader named Emilia Perez (Karla Sofía Gascón) in faking her own death before undergoing sex reassignment surgery. Perez is helped by lawyer Rita, while her wife - Selena Gomez's character - are relocated with their children to Switzerland.
But although Rotten Tomatoes shows the critics have given Emilia Perez over 80 percent, as have the audience, social media tells a different story. Those watching the sex change scene clip have even got into a dispute with one another.

Some of the lyrics in the clip include one character singing: "I'd like to know about sex change operation", with a doctor replying: "I see, I see, I see" - he goes on to say "man to woman" and "from penis to vagina". The clip currently has more than 8.1m views.
Someone replied describing the movie as “the most boring, generic crime drama you can conceive of, with the occasional demented music number inserted in." A third added: “A horrendously miscalculated medley of poor taste creative decisions in an attempt to seem ‘important’ and ‘empathetic.’”
After its Netflix release on November 13, another X user shared a musical snippet from the drama with the caption 'If this doesn't convince you to watch Emilia Pérez on Netflix, I don't know what will.' The post, which now has over 300K views, any commented under the post, echoing that they would not be tuning in because of the clip. One wrote: "Well, it certainly convinced me NOT to watch it", with another adding: "Nothing will convince me apparently because this is f**** terrible, dude." A third and fourth commenter similarly disparaged the thriller, saying: "Wtf is this..." and "Now I know to never ever watch it."
On the other hand, viewers who enjoyed the movie have defended its unique and 'wild' story.
"Yes Emilia Pérez is wild but so many of y'all are getting these clips and taking them 100% out of context. It's still bats*** but it flows with the context of the film. I kinda loved what it was doing and the story it was telling. And I loved Zoe's singing style," one devoted fan said.
