A topical historical drama depicting the creation of IVF; a paranoid thriller series starring Colman Domingo; a bracingly original crime musical, and awards contender, from Jacques Audiard; the second part of the final season of Cobra Kai; and a reverential big screen adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning August Wilson play are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in November.
On Nov. 7, action and mystery drama Outer Banks returns to Netflix. The first half of season four ended with several cliffhangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season. Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke. The cast have promised “craziness” so expect some more jaw-dropping revelations.
In a big movie month for Netflix, the streamer releases a potential Oscar contender on Nov. 13 with Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez. The French film, a musical crime drama that stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and won the Jury Prize and its female ensemble also won the best actress award. Emilia Pérez tells the story of a cartel leader (Gascón) who enlists a lawyer (Saldaña) to fake her death so she can live her true self.
New episodes of Cobra Kai drop on Netflix on Nov. 15, with the launch of the second three parts of the sixth and final season of the martial arts dramedy. In part two of season six, the Miyagi-Do find their way to Barcelona for the fight of their lives during the Sekai Taikai tournament, but sensei Johnny Lawrence has his hands full getting his karate students motivated to battle to become world champions.
On Nov. 22, Netflix releases the British historical drama Joy. The film tells the story of the birth of IVF, and its journey to becoming a true medical breakthrough in the U.K. in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite the period nature, the topic of IVF is more topical than ever, with threats to its use from some right wing politicians in the U.S. Bill Nighy leads a talented cast that includes Thomasin McKenzie and James Norton. Ben Taylor directs from a script from His Dark Materials scribe Jack Thorne.
Also debuting on Nov. 22, is Malcolm Washington’s big screen adaptation of August Wilson’s 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Piano Lesson. Another potential awards contender, the logline for the film reads: Set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, The Piano Lesson follows the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles household and an heirloom, the family piano, which documents the family history through carvings made by their enslaved ancestor. The always excellent Danielle Deadwyler leads the cast with Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, the latter two also starred in the Broadway revival of the play. The cast also includes Corey Hawkins, Michael Potts and Ray Fisher. Malcolm Washington, the son of Denzel Washington, makes his feature debut with The Piano Lesson and also co-wrote the screenplay with Virgil Williams.
The in-demand Colman Domingo appears in the Netflix series The Madness, that debuts on the streamer on Nov. 28. In the paranoia-filled conspiracy thriller, the Oscar nominee plays a media pundit who fears he’s being framed for a murder he stumbled upon. The eight-part drama was created by Stephen Belber, and it also stars Marsha Stephanie Blake, Gabrielle Graham and John Ortiz.
Movies added to Netflix in November include Free State of Jones, Goosebumps, Just Go With It, Maid in Manhattan, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Oblivion, Pompeii, The Scorpion King, Sixteen Candles, Superbad, The Whale, Whiplash, The Lost City, Focus, The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6.
