Rock icon Southside Johnny has abruptly announced that he is retiring from touring after more than five decades on the road.
The career decision comes as a result of "ongoing health issues".
The 76-year-old rock singer, who is the frontman and co-founder of the New Jersey-based Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, revealed that he has pulled the plug on his career as a live performer.
The announcement was shared in a statement released on the band's website and social media accounts.

"After a hugely successful 50-year run with his band, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, touring non-stop throughout the US and overseas, 'Southside Johnny' Lyon has made the decision to retire from touring in order to manage ongoing health issues," the statement read.
The news sent shockwaves through the band's fanbase with many taking to the comment section of the band's Instagram page to share their messages of thanks and support.
"Many thanks to Southside for all the shows over the last several decades! Best wishes to him with managing the health issues," one social media user wrote.

"Thank you for all the great music and incredible live performances Southside! Health and happiness to ya! Raising a glass to the salt of the earth," commented another.
"God bless! Thanks for the many years of shows and memories you have given us all! Your music played an enormous part in our lives and we will miss seeing you! Please take care of your health….. we love ya."

Legends of the music world, then and now
The sudden retirement prompted the cancellation of the band's upcoming shows including their annual New Year's Eve performance at the Count Basie Centre for the Arts in New Jersey.
The Count Basie Centre sent out their own statement following the announcement.
"Our show on New Year's Eve at the Count Basie Center will unfortunately be cancelled. Tickets will be refunded via your point of purchase," it read.
"Johnny Lyon and the Asbury Jukes are an integral part of the Basie Center's history and the history of music here at the Jersey Shore.
"While we're sad we won't be seeing them this New Year's Eve, everyone at the Count Basie Center is forever grateful for the hundreds of moments that he and his bandmates have created on our stages. We love you, Johnny!"

John Lyon, professionally known as Southside Jonny has long been considered the grandfather of the New Jersey sound.
He was the second act, following Bruce Springsteen, to be considered a part of the New Jersey sound.
Rocker Jon Bon Jovi has even cited Southside Johnny as his "reason for singing".
Southside Johnny has been touring with his band for 50 years throughout the United States and internationally.
The band did not disclose the nature of Southside Johnny's health issues.
