NFL Mock Draft Has the Dallas Cowboys Making a Desperate Reach for a Position of Need

5 hours ago 2

The Dallas Cowboys are already in danger of a lost season and have many needs that they will look to fill in the 2025 NFL Draft. A new mock draft came out that fills one of those needs, despite being a massive reach. Josh Edwards of CBS Sports released a new 2025 NFL mock draft in which he has the Cowboys selecting running back Ashton Jeanty at No. 9 overall.

Jeanty is a Heisman Trophy candidate and clearly the best running back in the 2025 NFL draft class. In fact, he is probably the only running back worthy of being selected in the first round of the draft.

On the face of it, this selection would be a huge boon to a Dallas offense that is clearly lacking any spark whatsoever on the ground. So far in 2024, the Cowboys have some of the worst rushing stats of any NFL team in the league.

The current leading rusher on the Cowboys is Rico Dowdle, who has 402 yards (and zero touchdowns) in nine games played. In total, the Cowboys have three rushing scores, one of which was taken in by quarterback Dak Prescott.

As a team, Dallas averages just 81.7 rushing yards per game, which ranks second-worst in the NFL behind only the Las Vegas Raiders.

It's no wonder that an NFL draft prospect like Jeanty sparkles like a diamond when considering what could help the Cowboys. After all, this young man has been nothing short of a miracle worker on the field for the Boise State Broncos the past couple of seasons. Through 10 games so far in 2024, the dynamic running back has racked up 1,991 yards and 27 yards from scrimmage.

It's not hard to imagine the Cowboys could benefit from that type of spark.

That being said, there are so many other needs that the Cowboys need to consider before they throw a high first-round pick at the running back spot.

For instance, Dallas' defense is also among the worst in the NFL. The Cowboys are getting absolutely throttled at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and must consider building their roster from the inside out before adding any (more) specialty pieces.

So, while it may seem like a fantastic idea for the Cowboys to draft Ashton Jeanty in the 2025 NFL Draft, it's actually short-sighted and could backfire in a major way.
