If we had a dollar for every time Nicole Kidman starred in an erotic thriller set in New York around Christmas time, we’d only have two. But as they say, “once is an instance, twice is a hobby”, and it appears that the Australian actress is ensuring theatres will be packed come the December 25 release date by sharing this piece of information while on the film’s press tour.
For the uninitiated, Kidman leads the Halina Reijn-directed drama as Romy, a high-powered CEO who becomes embroiled in an intoxicating and forbidden relationship with her much younger intern, played by internet boyfriend Harris Dickinson. As we’ve seen in the trailer, the movie will explore elements of domination and submission both in the boardroom and bedroom.
Her portrayal earned the 57-year-old the Best Actress award at the 2024 Venice Film Festival where Babygirl debuted. However, the role also merited an interesting reaction from Kidman while filming some of the more intimate scenes, too. The actress revealed that she was “sort of hypnotised” by the script from the outset, sharing that she was “turned on” by the material. But when it came to acting those moments out, Kidman explained that shooting the sex scenes often left her exhausted and frustrated.
“There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm any more. Don’t come near me. I hate doing this’,” Kidman divulged. “It was so present all the time for me that it was almost like a burnout,” she continued. Despite the taxing demands placed on her for the role, Kidman has also praised Babygirl and the relationship she forged with Reijn. “It’s the story that I wanted to be a part of, that I wanted to tell, and every part of me was committed to that,” she noted.
The movie also features Antonio Banderas, Esther McGregor and Australia’s own Sophie Wilde. While the film still is a few months away from being ours, it’s prime time to revisit Kidman’s other salacious yuletide classic, Stanley Krubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, or re-watch Babygirl’s trailer, which you can do, below:
