Legendary head coach Bill Belichick is finalizing a deal to become the University of North Carolina's new football coach.
Inside Carolina was the first to report.
Belichick is among the greatest and arguably the greatest football coaches of all time. After a year away from the sideline, he will return to the college scene.
The 72-year-old head coach was reportedly offered the position a handful of hours ago.
According to the Associated Press, the offer comes a few days after he had "a couple of good conversations" with North Carolina Chancellor Lee Roberts about the job.
Although Belichick has never coached at the collegiate level, he said his approach to the college game will be no different from how he treated the NFL.
"If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL," Belichick said. "It would be a professional program: training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques that would transfer to the NFL ... It would be an NFL program at a college level."
The Tar Heels parted ways with their former head coach, national champion coach Mack Brown, on Nov. 26 after their Week 13 loss to Boston College, 41-21.
Reports suggest that Belichick could ask for up to $12 million a year.
Belichick's resume is arguably the best by anyone who has been and will ever be a part of the NFL. As a head coach, Belichick is a six-time Super Bow champion, three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year, NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, 2010s All-Decade Team, NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, New England Patriots All-2000s Team, New England Patriots 50th Anniversary Team, New England Patriots All-2010s Team, and is a part of the New England Patriots All-Dynasty Team.
Belichick holds NFL records for most Super Bowl wins (8), most Super Bowl wins as a head coach (6), most Super Bowl appearances (12), most Super Bowl appearances as a head coach (9), most playoff wins as a head coach (31), most playoff appearances as a head coach (19, tied), and most divisional championships as a head coach (17).
Belichick has done it all in his coaching career, and now he will look to take North Carolina to new heights after the team finished with a 6-6 record and finished 12th in the ACC in 2024.
Belichick has a history with the Tar Heels as his father, Steve Belichick, coached the team's backfield from 1953-55. It is a full-circle moment for Belichick.
