What's New
A Sacramento man was charged with murder after local law enforcement allegedly found his 1-year-old son's head severed from his body.
Newsweek has reached out to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office for comment via email on Monday afternoon.
The Context
Andrey Demskiy, 28, is facing charges of murder, assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and corporal injury on spouse or cohabitant.
What To Know
Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence for a reported family disturbance at around 4:15 a.m. on Friday.
A woman outside of the home told deputies that her husband, Demskiy, assaulted her and her mother who was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials said Demskiy refused to answer the door and surrender. Deputies later learned that his 1-year-old son was inside the home.
The sheriff's office said they believed Demskiy "possibly injured the child after throwing him."
Deputies then forced entry into the home "fearing for the child's safety." They attempted to detain Demskiy who the sheriff's office said was "uncooperative and became physically resistive."
The sheriff's office said deputies then made a "gruesome" discovery when they allegedly found the severed head of a child in a bedroom.
Detectives with the sheriff office's Child Abuse Bureau said Demskiy was involved in a domestic violence incident with his wife and mother-in-law. The wife and mother-in-law then left the home and waited for deputies to arrive.
After they left the home, Demskiy allegedly used a knife to behead and kill his son.
The child was identified by the Sacramento County coroner's office on Saturday as Micah Demskiy. A GoFundMe started by the family has collected over $77,000 so far.
What People Are Saying
Amar Gandhi, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, told local news station KCRA that the incident was "one of the most horrific things" he's ever heard of and that deputies were "visibly shaken."
He added: "For this family who has got to pick up the pieces and go on—their world is shattered."
Micah's family in its GoFundMe fundraiser: "The sweet little boy was a kind and joyful soul, loving all people and especially dogs. His kind heart and beautiful smile warmed the hearts of everyone he came in contact with. He loved his family and especially his mama."
What Happens Next
Andrey Demskiy is being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
