Olympic gold medallist Dame Laura Kenny has announced she’s pregnant after suffering two heartbreaking losses.

The cyclist, who is the most successful British female athlete in Olympic history after winning six Olympic medals during her career, married fellow track cyclist Jason Kenny in 2016.

Their first son Albie was both in 2017, while their second Monty was born in 2023.

However, the Team GB legend suffered a miscarriage in 2021 after having their first son, before Dame Laura also had to undergo surgery and have a fallopian tube removed due to an ectopic pregnancy the following year.

But the couple have now announced their happy news on New Year’s Eve as they prepare to welcome their third child.

In an Instagram post tagging her husband, Dame Laura, 32, wrote: ‘2024 was wonderful, 2025 is going to be even more special.’

The video she posted zoomed out from her Christmas tree onto the backs of her two young sons, who were wearing T-shirts that read: ‘I’m going to be a big brother to a baby.’

The clip then showed Dame Laura standing in front of the tree cradling her bump and smiling.

She was flooded with messages of support, with many posting their congratulations.

Last year Dame Laura left many shocked after announcing she was stepping down from the sport just a few months before she’d been expected to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

During an appearance on The High Performance podcast last year, she also spoke about how her difficulties to conceive her second child started becoming an obsession after the difficulties she faced.

‘I cannot tell you how low I felt for 18 months, with this desire to have another baby, and it consumed me,’ she shared.

‘It was the first time Jason said to me he’d seen me change. I could see my personality — sad, upset — because I’m not like that. I’m like this bubbly person.

‘I knew that my every day was, “Am I going to be pregnant?’ I just felt so alone”.’

She went on to admit she’d put ‘pressure’ on her husband to make her ‘feel better’.

‘I don’t think I realised until afterwards how much pressure I was putting on him for that. No one ever asks how the males are,’ she said.

Dame Laura said that it was only after she became pregnant with her second son that she gave herself the chance to grieve for the two children she had previously lost, recalling ‘bursting out crying’ finding out about her pregnancy, but ‘feeling so sad for everything I’d lost in the past’.

‘The miscarriage was one thing, the ectopic was another level of scariness, and I never really processed that because all I ever wanted was another baby…I almost didn’t give myself time to process it’.

Around the same time she explained how this period was ‘mentally the toughest period’ of her life.
