'One was in the toilet': Territory cast members recall Aussie wildlife encounters

1 month ago 10

A snake and a toilet dwelling frog, adorably named Albert, were just two of the Aussie critters that enjoyed quarters with the cast and crew of the upcoming Australian series Territory.

Actors Philipa Northeast and Sam Corlett returned to their Aussie roots to film the show and working in the remote regions of the Northern Territory and South Australia were welcomed by plenty of our animals.

"We had a few different encounters," Corlett, who plays Marshall Lawson in the new series, tells 9honey.

"Yeah, one was in the toilet," Northeast, who plays Susie Lawson, says, laughing as she recalls the experience. "There was a frog living in our toilet."

Northeast turns to Corlett to ask him what he named the frog but he can't remember. She does. It was Albert.

"Albert, yes it was,"  Corlett remembers. "We had Albert and then there was a snake in one of the crew's toilets."

It didn't stop there. Northeast and Corlett recall dingoes, cane toads and deer. Each morning, Corlett explains, "it would always be packed with kangaroos" and the cast and crew had to make a wide birth of the crocodiles.

"There were crocs everywhere," he recalls.

Filming in the NT, crocs were an expected part of the experience but there was one particular moment that Northeast didn't expect the crocs to play such a big role in.

"I've never had the experience of doing an intimate scene and having a croc spotter just by the edge of the water like this as you're trying to focus on the other actor and they're trying to focus on keeping you alive," Northeast says.

"So that was an interesting experience."

While the crocs and the croc spotter may have made for an awkward intimacy scene, both Corlett and Northeast agree that the wildlife was a welcome part of the experience.

"It was very special in terms of wildlife," Northeast shares.

Crocs, kangaroos and frogs named Albert come part and parcel with the Aussie experience and both Northeast and Corlett are thrilled to be part of a project so close to home.

"The fact that we were able to speak and talk in our own accents in our own voices made this experience so incredibly special because it was just I mean obviously closer to our culture and sounded more like the histories that we've been a part of and grown up in um so that was that for me was pretty special," Northeast says.

"Yeah there's like a… whether it be like the joy or the ecstasy or for me it was the mongrel that was so available because of you know growing up playing rugby and all that stuff," Corlett adds.

"I think like you know we were able to kind of enter this kind of dirty Australia which hasn't been on screen like this before."

All the stars at the Sydney screening of Netflix's Territory

The new series, out October 24, has been described by some as the Aussie version of the widely popular Yellowstone

Asked if they had been in touch with Kevin Costner or any of the Yellowstone stars, Northeast and Corlett say they haven't but they believe Territory will stand on its own two feet.

"Nah haven't got Kevin on the phone yet, but that is an epic series," Corlett shared.

"I kind of hesitated in actually watching because I heard that comparison but what I have known to be true is this is so unapologetically Australian that it's going to differentiate itself from anything um that we've seen before."

"The Australian cattle industry is of its own and we represent that on such an epic scale on screen so that it would be hard to make direct comparison to America because it's just not that industry here," Northeast adds.

Both Northeast and Corlett have made waves in their careers since they started out. Northeast most notably starred on Home and Away and Corlett has notably starred in The Dry and Vikings: Valhalla.

For those who may be looking to follow in their footsteps and pursue a career in acting, they each have their own pieces of wisdom to share.

Corlett says the biggest piece of advice is to be unapologetically yourself.

"Often at times when you start in your career you feel like you should be what you perceive that they want or should be like someone else who's been successful," Corlett says.

"But what tends to be the gold is what's uniquely from your own heart and your own experiences and what you have to say."

Northeast agrees but says her advice would be to "stay at it".

"Obviously that's a privileged thing to say because most of the time you've got to take up other work whilst you're pursuing acting to live," Northeast says.

"But if you can just stick at it eventually the story that's meant for you will come along but you've still got to be in the game to accept that story."
