Patriots HC Jerod Mayo Provides Big Update on Drake Maye's Status for Week 9

New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has an update on quarterback Drake Maye after the team released its first injury report since he took a helmet-to-helmet hit in a 25-22 victory last weekend over the New York Jets.

According to Mayo, Maye remains on NFL concussion protocol, which has curtailed his ability to practice for the Patriots' match-up against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday (per WMUR9). If Maye is still unable to play by then, Jacoby Brissett will start as quarterback.

Mayo said " (Maye) will throw the ball at times in practice, but he will be limited. There are people a lot smarter than me, as far as clearing people with concussions. We'll lean on our medical professionals — and also the NFL league policy — as far as getting him ready to play."

Maye rushed for a 17-yard touchdown against the Jets last Sunday and later scrambled for 18 yards in the first quarter. He sustained a head injury while gaining yards for a first down; as he slid to the ground, he was hit in the back of the head by Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood. With Maye unable to continue, veteran Jacoby Brissett quickly took over as quarterback and led the Patriots to a three-point victory, ending their six-game losing streak.

Maye was taken out of the game after the NFL's spotter instructed the team to have him evaluated in the medical tent. It was reported that Maye wanted to return by halftime, but remained benched for the game. Mayo later criticized refs and referred to some of their calls as "questionable," which many took as a pointed comment on the lack of a penalty for Maye's hit.

Mayo also said at the time, "When I spoke to him, he seemed like he was OK. But I'm not an expert in evaluating head injuries. The spotter identified it and they know the league and their policy."

The Patriots coach's update said, "I do have confidence that if the league says [Maye is] ready to play, that he will be able to go out there and operate. In saying that, I feel very comfortable putting Jacoby in there, as he is a professional and always stays ready as you could see from the last game. Having a veteran quarterback like Jacoby puts us at ease."

Veteran Jacoby Brissett began the Patriots' season as starting quarterback but was demoted to Maye's backup earlier this month as the team fell to 1–4. Against the Jets, Brissett came off the bench to complete 15 of 24 passes for 132 yards and twice helped the team take the lead with scores in the fourth quarter.
