Piers Morgan has paid tribute to his close friend of 45 years after his tragic death from an aggressive cancer. Piers spoke about his pal, Miles, and the adventures they had before he was diagnosed with the devastating condition.

Miles, aged 57 and “fit as a fiddle”, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma after finding a brain tumour “the size of an apple”.

According to Cancer Research UK, Glioblastoma is a fast-growing type of brain tumour and the most common type of cancerous brain tumour in adults.

Sharing a series of photographs with his friend, Piers wrote on Instagram: “Said goodbye to one of my best mates yesterday. Miles Caldwell was the first friend I made in my East Sussex village of Newick, 45 years ago.

“We went to school together, played and watched cricket together, were ushers at each other’s weddings, partied with each other around the world, enjoyed Test matches at Lord’s together (100+ times), went on decades of annual village lads’ golf trips together, enjoyed endless long hilarious lunches and dinners together, and mercilessly mocked each other the entire time we were in each other’s company.

“He was one of the funniest, kindest, most popular people imaginable, beloved by his family and friends.”

Detailing the tragic moment Miles discovered his illness, Piers continued: “In July, 2023, during another trip to Lord’s for the Ashes, he turned up oddly late and didn’t look right. After seeing a doctor at the ground, he was sent by ambulance to the nearby UCLH hospital for a scan, which revealed he had a brain tumour the size of an apple.

“It was diagnosed as Glioblastoma, an incurable and vicious cancer which kills most people who get it within a year.

“Miles, who was just 57 and fit as a fiddle, survived 15 months and dealt with this devastating blow like he dealt with everything in life - with remarkable calmness, a lot of self-deprecating humour, and not an ounce of self-pity.

“The nearest he came to feeling sorry for himself was saying with a wry smile, ‘it’s not ideal’, about his ever-worsening condition.”

Piers said goodbye to his friend at his funeral in Newick, East Sussex, on Thursday. He was joined by Miles’s loved ones who had been by his side before his “slow, cruel” death.

The journalist concluded: “Newick church was packed to the rafters yesterday, and we gave him a fantastic send-off led by his wife Colleen, son Austin, sister Sarah, and all his family who showed him such incredible love and devotion as they watched the man they loved die a slow, cruel, inevitable death.

“As for his many friends, we will all miss him so much. He was the greatest mate you could ever wish to have. RIP Caldy.”
