Pixel 9a reportedly gets a bigger 5,000 mAh battery despite being the same size

Google’s mid-range Pixel lineup has offered great specs on the whole, but generally has a smaller battery than the flagship models. According to a new report, though, the Pixel 9a will have a way bigger battery, the same size as the company’s current flagship.

According to a new report from Android Headlines, Google is preparing for a 5,000 mAh battery in the Pixel 9a. That’s up from the 4,492 mAh battery found in Pixel 8a, a considerable upgrade.

If this turns out to be true, the Pixel 9a would end up matching the battery capacity of Google’s flagship Pixel 9 Pro XL, which also has a 5,000 mAh battery. Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro Fold are both smaller at 4,700 mAh and 4,650 mAh respectively.

The big grain of salt here, though, is in regards to size.

The Pixel 9a is reportedly coming in at 154.7 x 73.2 x 8.9mm, roughly the same size as the Pixel 8a which measured 152.1 x 72.7 x 8.9mm. Exactly how Google plans to cram an 11% larger battery in this device is unclear considering it’s less than 2% taller, less than 1% wider, and the same thickness as its predecessor.

Whatever magic Google may be working behind the scenes, this is great news if it turns out to be true.

Pixel 9a is also expected to bring some camera changes, a radical redesign, and a much earlier release date.
