Since premiering in 2014, STARZ’s Power series went on to take on a life of its own, spawning multiple spinoffs and various fandoms. A decade later, fans are revisiting a statement made by the show’s creator, Courtney Kemp, about which characters she regrets killing off in the show.
The talented TV writer says she was unaware at the time that the show would continue via spinoffs. “If I had known we were going to do a universe, there are three characters that I would not have killed off,” she stated in an Instagram Live from just over three years ago. “This is how we know that I didn’t plan it in advance. The first one is LaKeisha. I would not have killed Proctor off… I mean it’s tough to say, this is going to be so random, but I might have potentially kept Black Donovan alive.”
The characters named are played by La La Anthony, Jerry Ferrara, and Ty Jones, respectively. Several fans were anticipating her to say arguably the most shocking death in the series, the main character Ghost, played by Omari Hardwick.
During its run, Power had become one of the highest rated shows on cable, so the news of the show ending came as a surprise to many. However, Kemp had her reasons for bringing the beloved show to a close.
“I had run out of story,” Kemp told Ad Week in 2021. “I didn’t want to continue to make a bad show. I got inspired by the Marvel Universe. As someone who watched the X-Men cartoon as a kid, I just love the idea of creating the universe and how they did it, which was—and obviously I copied this—taking specific characters and looking at them in new ways.”
Power Book II: Ghost debuted in 2020 and just wrapped up its final season last October. It focused on Ghost and Tasha’s son, Tariq St. Patrick, as he navigated his life in college and growing his own empire. Then came Power Book III: Raising Kanan in 2021, which chronicles the early years of Kanan Stark, 50 Cent’s character. Finally, Power Book IV: Force began in 2022 and is centered around Tommy Egan, Ghost’s right-hand man.
