The Netflix series that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle produced, Polo, is nearing its premiere date with very little fanfare — so far. The behind-the-scenes docuseries shows the dramatic side to the sport of polo drops on Dec. 10, but the Sussexes’ critics are already voicing their opinions.
Let’s be clear that the royal couple’s naysayers have only seen the trailer, so they are judging Harry and Meghan’s latest project on the two minutes and twenty-eight seconds from the clip. The Daily Beast spoke with a former friend of Harry’s who claimed that the series looked “so tacky and cringey” while a Hollywood executive thinks the show “has failed to capture the imagination.”

The five-episode project describes itself as an “unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look into the passion and determination driving some of the world’s elite polo players, revealing the grit behind the glamour,” per Page Six. The Duke of Sussex’s pal Nacho Figueras will appear in the Netflix show and he seemed pretty excited to be working with the royal.
“Prince Harry and I have talked about polo for years. The production company is incredible, and Netflix has a huge platform to reach the biggest hearts in the world. I am happy to be involved and think this is a great opportunity for the sport,” Figueras explained to People in April.
The show is offering plenty of drama with the father-son duo Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso facing off against each other at the 2024 US Open, which is highlighted in the trailer. There’s also plenty of romance and glamour teased in the clip which seems like the perfect fit for Netflix. The streaming network has been successful with sports docuseries that have a soap-opera element, including Cheer, Formula 1: Drive to Survive, and America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
It’s too early to count out Meghan and Harry ahead of Polo‘s premiere — this show might just hit a sweet spot for Netflix fans. The Sussexes could use a hit to prove their critics wrong, though, and the Hollywood studio executive understands what’s on the line for them. “They still have Meghan’s cooking show to screen next year but there is very little tolerance for pissing money away these days,” he said of the entertainment industry’s economic contraction to The Daily Beast.
Meghan and Harry hope Polo hits the mark.
