Racing legend Roger Penske has proposed an insane partnership between NASCAR and IndyCar as a way of each sport boosting the other.
Penske, who owns Team Penske, IndyCar, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, claims that the two racing series could organize double headers to boost excitement amongst fans and also attract fans from the other sport for a more full weekend of racing action.
Whilst speaking during the NASCAR Awards, Penske explained to the press, as reported by NBC Sports:
"We might see, as we did with NASCAR, doubleheaders.
"I haven't talked about this, I'm not announcing anything but think about it, Indy, we ran a doubleheader there with IndyCar and NASCAR."
The two racing series have previously adopted a similar race weekend to what Penske has suggested. From 2020 to 2023, NASCAR and IndyCar collaborated on a race weekend at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Speaking about the previous success of this format, Penske commented:
"I know it was successful.
"We could see it with the fan base at Indy."
He added:
"We go to these temporary circuits, to have two racing series that could come in and help pay for those assets and that build and build out will be very important.
"The fan base, think about it, you're going to cross-pollinate people. It might be NASCAR fans will see Indy or something else. We see that, obviously, with IMSA running with us at Long Beach and places like that."
Team Penske driver Joey Logano won is third Cup Series championship in 2024. Speaking about Penske's influence on his championship success, Logano explained:
"Roger Penske does that. He doesn't say that. But you know where you're working when you walk into team Penske, you see that there's a 47th Championship they've won in Motorsports. That's a lot! He's been doing this for a long time. The guy wins, he expects you to win or you're not going to be there very long."
As well as Logano's success, his teammate Ryan Blaney also secured the second position in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series standings after a close but clean Championship 4 battle with Logano in Phoenix.
