How long will Garrett Crochet be atop the Boston Red Sox rotation?
The Red Sox acquired the ace left-hander last month in a deal that sent catcher Kyle Teel and outfielder Braden Montgomery, among other prospects, to the Chicago White Sox. With just two years left on Crochet's deal, Boston must sign the 25-year-old to a long-term extension to justify the blockbuster trade.
So, have the two sides gotten any closer to a deal? Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow offered an update during a recent appearance on NESN's "310 to Left" podcast.
"Obviously when you have someone as uniquely talented as Garrett is, and someone at this age and we feel like is going to help our team in the short term and potentially can help our team in the long term, it's something that we have to be open to," Breslow said.
"But they also have to be open to it as well. And I think Garrett and I are still getting to know each other and by all accounts, his introduction to Boston, to the Red Sox and to our fans, has been spectacular. So I think those are conversations that will pick up."
Crochet, the 11th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, debuted that year but pitched just 73 innings between his first appearance and the end of the 2023 season. He missed the entire 2022 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
However, Crochet broke out in a big way last season, posting a 3.58 ERA, 1.068 WHIP and 12.9 strikeouts-per-nine-innings while showing elite ability over 32 starts. He projects as Boston's No. 1 starter in 2025.
