The Boston Red Sox added ace Garrett Crochet in a blockbuster trade earlier this offseason, but they haven't done much else. While the Red Sox had a $700 million offer on the table for free agent Juan Soto, they haven't pivoted to a backup plan with that money.
Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley recently predicted the Red Sox to use some of their money to sign free-agent slugger Anthony Santander of the Baltimore Orioles. Jon Heyman of the New York Post projects Santander to sign a $100 million deal following a 44 home run campaign in 2024.
"Anthony Santander had 44 reasons to think a major payday was coming this offseason," Buckley wrote. "Those would be the career-high 44 homers he launched this past season, by far his most productive to date. In addition to the dingers, he tallied 91 runs and 102 RBI. The homers and RBI were both team-highs on the 91-win Baltimore Orioles and marks that led to his first ever honors as an All-Star and a Silver Slugger."
Buckley continues on to state Santander might not land a deal as lucrative as he's looking for, but he'll still get paid a pretty penny, especially if it comes with the Red Sox.
Still, a deal with the Red Sox could make sense. Boston still has a lot of money to spend and if it doesn't land one of the top pitchers, pivoting to a high-ceiling bat like Santander makes a lot of sense.
