Many people do not think twice about the rubber deal on the door of washing machines, but it needs to be cleaned every 3 months to stop it from becoming a hotspot for mould.

If your clothes are still smelly and not cleaned properly after doing the laundry then your washing machine is likely mouldy, but do not fear as it is easy to clean in minutes.
The rubber seal around washing machine doors is known to collect moisture, soap and bacteria, which is why it is important to keep the door open after a wash.
If you notice any gunk inside the rubber seal then you likely have a mould problem, which will affect your clothes and can cause the washing machine not to seal properly and lead to leaks.
However, the appliance specialists at Anderston James, have shared that removing mould and any gunky build-up inside your washing machine door is very easy as all you need is a dishwasher tablet.
They said: “Dishwasher tablets are designed to tackle tough grease, grime, and food residue in dishwashers, making them equally effective at cutting through detergent build-up, dirt, and mould in your washing machine.

“These tablets contain powerful cleaning agents that dissolve grime, break down stubborn residues, and deodorise surfaces, making them a great option for maintaining your washing machine.”
It may seem bizarre, but dishwasher tablets contain powerful detergents which are strong enough to break down mould and grease from any soap lingering on the seal.
Dishwasher tablets often contain ingredients that will sanitise dishes and so are useful to kill any bacteria to prevent mould spores from being able to grow back.
How to clean your washing machine door with a dishwasher tablet
To begin, make sure your washing machine is empty and has no clothes inside it before cleaning.
Then all you need to do is place two to three dishwasher tablets directly in the drum where you would normally put clothes.

Set your washing machine on the hottest and longest cycle available, then turn it on and leave the appliance to run the cycle.
The expert said: “The heat will help the dishwasher tablets break down any stubborn grime and build-up. This also helps disinfect the interior of the machine, killing any bacteria or mould.”
Once the cycle ends, use warm water and a clean cloth to wipe down the rubber seals to ensure all the build-up and mould have been removed. Your rubber seal should now be completely clean and mould-free.
Give your washing machine door seal a good clean every one to three months to prevent any mould or bacteria from growing back in the future.
