Richard Cohen, a distinguished journalist and husband of television personality Meredith Vieira, passed away on December 24, 2024, at the age of 76. Cohen's death followed a prolonged battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition he had managed for over five decades.
Cohen's career in journalism was both extensive and impactful. He held significant positions at major networks, including CBS News and CNN, earning recognition for his work as a senior producer and receiving multiple Emmy Awards. Despite his professional achievements, Cohen's personal life was marked by health challenges. Diagnosed with MS at 25, he also faced two bouts of colon cancer and, in 2014, was hospitalized due to a blood clot.
Throughout these trials, Vieira remained a steadfast supporter. The couple, who married in 1986, shared three children: Benjamin, Gabriel, and Lily. Vieira often spoke about the realities of living with a partner facing chronic illness, emphasizing the importance of resilience and mutual support. In a 2018 interview, Cohen acknowledged the strain his health issues placed on their marriage but highlighted their shared commitment to navigating these challenges together.
Beyond his journalism career, Cohen was an advocate for individuals living with chronic illnesses. He authored several books, including "Blindsided" and "Strong at the Broken Places," where he candidly discussed his experiences with MS and cancer, aiming to provide hope and insight to others facing similar battles.
Cohen's passing was announced during NBC's "Today" show, where hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie noted that he died surrounded by family. His life stands as a testament to enduring strength in the face of chronic illness, leaving a legacy of journalistic excellence and personal resilience.
