Legendary NASCAR figure Richard Petty has spoken out as Legacy Motor Club prepares for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series.
Petty is best known for his remarkable career and now takes on the role of minority owner and chief ambassador at LMC.
The team, which was rebranded from Petty GMS Racing, is co-owned by Maury Gallagher, with NASCAR icon Jimmie Johnson.
LMC heads into the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season continuing its partnership with Toyota Racing Development.
The team's move to Toyota from Chevrolet began at the end of the 2023 season. Though their first year partnering with Toyota saw ups and downs, the LMC team is hopeful for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series. They are focused on making substantial improvements to their performance.
Speaking about the upcoming season, Petty explained:
"We're looking, really looking forward to it. We've had one year with Toyota, and now we've just redone the whole business of Legacy [Motor Club]."
The team has seen a series of personnel changes recently. These changes involve hiring new crew chiefs, engineers, and additional necessary staff.
While the drivers remain the same, Petty explained how the alterations have created a renewed sense of beginnings within the team.
"We got the same drivers, but we got different crew chiefs, we got different people working on the car, we got different engineers. So, it's really almost like starting with a new team.
"So, I think all of our people are excited about it. [We] Have put the right people together in the right place. So, it's gonna be exciting for us just because it's gonna be like completely starting all over again."
Johnson is set to enter into the Daytona 500 this year, however, he won't be able to make use of the new Open Exemption Provisional as four-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves has been granted the OEP entry.
Speaking about Johnson's exclusion from the new rule, Kenny Wallace commented, as previously reported by Newsweek Sports:
"Jimmie Johnson's a seven-time NASCAR champion. You know, he knows how to drive these cars, and as sad as it is to say, I think... Jimmie Johnson is a legend, but he's just not going to draw the crowd that Helio Castroneves would. That's my opinion ... Now that's a cold hard fact, and I know that's hard to hear."
