RuPaul's DragCon announces new measures in wake of The Vivienne's death

RuPaul's DragCon announced a touching new measure to their events after The Vivienne's tragic death.

The Vivienne, real name James Lee Williams, died on Sunday aged 32, with the news being confirmed by publicist and pal Simon Jones. Announcing The Vivienne's death, the publicist issued a statement that read: "It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams -The Vivienne, has passed this weekend.

"James was an incredibly loved, warm- hearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career. We will not be releasing any further details. We please ask that James's family are given the time and privacy they now need to process and grieve."

Following the heartbreaking news, RuPaul's DragCon took to their Instagram page to reveal they're setting up a memorial booth at the event, which is happening on January 10 and 11 at ExCeL London - so that fans can share their condolences and pay tribute to the iconic drag queen - who won the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK in 2019.

They wrote: "As we all move through this weekend together, we know that many of us will want to celebrate The Vivienne by sharing condolences with those close to her. Please be mindful that we all process and experience grief differently and some people might not be ready yet to talk about the loss of someone important to them.

"We're providing a memorial booth space on the pink carpet where all the attendees of DragCon can go to pay tribute to The Vivienne, share condolences, and speak about it if they're ready. We also have Switchboard LGBTQ+ helpline with us for the third year in a row, and if you need someone to talk with, they are there to listen. Please visit them at booth D26 if you need.

The statement concluded: "We cannot wait to see everyone this weekend and fill the room with love." Fellow drag artists took to the comment section to praise the movie, with Danny Beard writing: "Lovley!!! Thanks for doing this guys!" and Maxine LaQueene posting: "Thank you for offering space for people to grieve and give condolences to Viv."

While a cause of death has not yet been given, a police update was given on Monday stating that they discovered no suspicious circumstances at the scene of The Vivienne's death. A spokesman for Cheshire Police said officers had been called to an address in Chorlton-by-Backford, near Chester, at 12.22pm on Sunday following reports of a sudden death.

The spokesman said: "Police attended, investigated the circumstances of the death of the 32-year-old man and concluded there were no suspicious circumstances. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
