Selena Gomez Claps Back at ‘Sick’ Body-Shaming Comments: ‘I’m Just Human’

Selena Gomez clapped back at internet trolls who made “sick” body-shaming comments after she attended a recent public appearance.

The 32-year-old star attended a screening of her film Emilia Perez at the American French Film Festival on Oct. 28, some fans critiqued her look in a now-deleted TikTok video.

“This makes me sick. I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up,” she replied in the comments, as shown in a screenshot published by TMZ. “I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”

SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, “is an imbalance of the microorganisms in your gut that maintain healthy digestion,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. It can cause “uncomfortable symptoms like gas and diarrhea” when there’s an excess or imbalance of bacteria in the small intestine.

This clapback comes ten months after Selena addressed her changing appearance in an Instagram Stories post in January. “Today, I realized I will never look like this again,” she wrote, sharing a throwback photo of herself in a bikini from 2013. She followed it up with a current snapshot from 2023. “I’m not perfect but I am proud to be who I am … sometimes I forget it’s OK to be me.”

The Only Murders in the Building actress has been open about her body journey, especially following her lupus diagnosis and kidney transplant in 2017.

Selena has also previously shared her struggles with body image, explaining that she took her first social media break in 2018 after challenges with her appearance and her high-profile split from Justin Bieber.

“I had just gotten my heart broken. I didn’t need to see what everyone was doing,” she told *Fast Company* in October 2023. “Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I’d see on Instagram. Wow, I wish my body looked like that.”

She reflected on the criticism she faced after her “teenager body” began changing as she got older in the public eye. “None of the sample sizes were fitting, and that would make me feel embarrassed,” she recalled. “Although how unrealistic is it to expect a normal woman’s body not to change?”
