Sister Wives’ Janelle Brown Claims Kody Took ‘Lots’ of Money From Family Fund: ‘Really Hard’

Sister Wives star Janelle Brown claimed that ex-husband Kody Brown took a significant amount of money from their family fund before they ended their spiritual marriage.

“I never felt like I had much control over my own money because everybody was pulling from the same [account],” Janelle, 55, admitted to former sister wife Christine Brown during the Sunday, January 26, episode.

After noting that it was “great” to have a family fund when they were a plural unit, Janelle claimed that money became an issue for Kody, 55, and all four of his then-wives.

“We set our family up that way. But, like, toward the end, it was just really hard,” Janelle shared. “When we all first started, there was kind of like this thing [where] we weighed in on what bills should be paid, how we were going to pay, who got priority.”

Janelle then claimed that Kody had spent money behind her back before she ended their marriage. “And then the last several years, Kody would just take out funds and I don’t know what for. And the money was just being spent — and lots of it,” she added.

After Janelle made the claims, Kody denied the accusations that he spent money behind her back without cause. “I was a father to 18 and a husband to more than just Janelle,” he argued. “So we had a lot of places that money needed to go that weren’t always Janelle’s business.”

The businessman went on to point out that Janelle was “doing the bookkeeping” for the family, so she was aware of all of his financial transactions. “So, some of the bills to be paid by all of us were supposed to be paid by her,” Kody said.

However, Janelle fired back by claiming that she did not have as much access to the funds as Kody claimed.

“He loves this mantra that somehow I was [the] all powerful one with all the financial control,” she said. “I really was just the person who recorded the transactions and sent them to the CPA.”

In Touch exclusively confirmed that Janelle had ended her marriage to Kody in December 2022. “Janelle is a strong independent woman and realized she can do it on her own,” a source exclusively revealed at the time, adding that she made the decision to leave him because she “outgrew him.”

Their split came one year after Christine, 52, left the Brown patriarch in November 2021. Meanwhile, Kody and Meri Brown confirmed their split by issuing a joint statement in January 2023. The three splits meant that Kody’s fourth wife, Robyn Brown, was his only remaining spouse.

Janelle and Kody discussed the family’s finances two months after she slammed his and Meri’s claims that she “controlled” the money.

During the November 24, 2024, episode, Janelle recalled talking to Meri, 54, about her concerns that Kody didn’t have their best interests at heart.

“She basically implied that she was so surprised, like, somehow, she thought I’d been controlling the money,” Janelle told Christine. “I’m like, ‘Dude, man, if I controlled the money we would have paid off, built a house.’”

Janelle added, “I don’t know what Kody’s been saying about, like, somehow, I’m controlling the money.”
