Sister Wives star Janelle Brown opened up about how her family’s reality show impacts her and ex-husband Kody Brown’s kids.
“We were always very protective of them when they were younger as far as filming,” Janelle, 55, said about her children during the Tuesday, November 5, episode of the “Reality Life with Kate Casey” podcast. “If they wanted to be on camera on whatever.”
Janelle added that each of her children’s relationships to the TLC show has changed as they’ve gotten older. “As they’ve gotten older, some of them have chosen to be public, but some have chosen to completely step away,” she noted. “I think it’s just each kid, and they’re at the age where they know what they want to do.”
The former couple share kids Logan Brown, 30, Madison Brush, 29, Hunter Brown, 27, Gabriel Brown, 23, Savanah Brown, 19. Their son Robert Garrison Brown died at the age of 25 in March after he committed suicide.
The TV personality also reflected on if the Brown family would still be in each other’s lives without the show.
“It’s hard to know,” Janelle admitted. “Really, it’s hard to know. I don’t know. Everybody changes. We could have gotten to the same point. But I’m really glad now we do have a lot of opportunities now.”
Janelle announced her split from Kody, 55, in December 2022 after 30 years of spiritual marriage. Their separation came after Christine Brown ended her marriage to the patriarch in November 2021, and the breakups continued in January 2023 when Meri Brown confirmed that she and Kody went their separate ways.
The mother of six has been open about her complex feelings toward Kody on the latest season of Sister Wives. During the November 3 episode, Janelle and Kody met up to discuss his hopes of reconciling with their kids amid their estrangement.
“Last night, I was up late with Robyn [Brown] and we were having a discussion about our values and the fact that I’ve struggled with mine through the divorce process and everything that’s happened,” he explained in a confessional, adding that he “lost his sense of direction [in] his life” and there were certain things he felt guilty about.
Not only did Kody approach Janelle about his hopes to fix his relationships with their children, but he also wondered if Janelle was willing to give their relationship another try.
“You complain about my independence, and I will complain about your selfishness and [you being] self-absorbed,” Janelle told Kody, shutting down the idea. “You are a little bit.”
Janelle also added that Kody’s estrangement from their children was a major factor in their issues. “The kids are all feeling very estranged from you,” she continued. “There’s a lot of nuances, and I can’t be in the middle.”
While Janelle made it clear that she did not want to rekindle her romantic relationship with Kody, she did admit that she was still attracted to certain things about the businessman.
“I don’t think we even exist in the same universe anymore,” Janelle stated. “I think you’re awesome. And whenever we talk, I still feel that like you’ve got this little, this little hook in me or whatever. But I’ve been so happy [without you] that I don’t foresee a long term thing for us.”
