Sister Wives star Kody Brown said that he “crashed the ship” of his life following his divorces from ex-wives Christine Brown, Janelle Brown and Meri Brown, and compared the situation to Cher and Sonny Bono’s split.
“When Sonny and Cher got divorced, I was six, I was five, and it broke my heart,” Kody, 55, said in a teaser clip for the Sunday, October 27, episode of Sister Wives shared by People. “It freaked me out. I was like divorce is the biggest evil of, you know, it’s just something that saddened me.”
Sonny and Cher, 78, divorced in 1975 after 11 years of marriage.
“At six and seven years old, I had no awareness that the idea, the concept of divorce was real,” Kody continued. “Sonny and Cher getting a divorce devastating. Like, does that really happen?”
He then reflected on his own divorces. “This isn’t supposed to be part of the story that I’m writing about myself,” the Brown patriarch said. “You know what I mean? And everybody’s their story. You’re the author of your story. My story is taking a turn.”
Kody added that he and his exes have “ridden the wave” as they adjust to the new normal states of their lives. “We’ve crashed the ship. We survived. We’re on the shore, but we crashed the ship. That’s the realization,” he said while becoming emotional. “We crashed the ship and that does make me terribly sad.”
The first wife to leave Kody was Christine, 52, in November 2021. Janelle, 55, ended their spiritual marriage in December 2022, and Meri confirmed her split from Kody soon after in January 2023. He has remained married to his fourth wife, Robyn Brown.
However, In Touch previously reported that Kody and Robyn, 45, may be experiencing trouble in paradise. “Robyn may be Kody’s last wife standing, but that looks like it’s about to change,” a source revealed in September. “They’ve put their Flagstaff home on the market and the whispers are that it’s because Robyn wants out.”
The source added that the couple hasn’t “been the same since Meri, Janelle and Christine left him.”
“Robyn and Kody argue about small things that shouldn’t matter and they butt heads often,” the insider continued. “They’ve basically drifted apart. This is not the life Robyn envisioned. All the signs are there, a split is inevitable.”
The businessman has been open about his splits on the show, while he reflected on how unhealthy the relationships were during the October 20 episode.
“I was in terrible relationships but wasn’t willing to discard them, didn’t want to discard them,” he said during a confessional. “[I] didn’t even know I was in terrible relationships.”
He went on to acknowledge that people who are in “bad” relationships don’t often know at the time. “You just think you’re in a normal relationship because all your friends have the same problem until you’re in a normal relationship that has deep emotional intimacy instead of the [butting heads],” the reality star continued, seemingly referencing his marriage to Robyn.
“Some people call it F&F. And the second word is fight. Or F&F and the first word is fight,” Kody continued while reflecting on his sex lives with Christine, Janelle and Meri. “That doesn’t create intimacy, that just creates orgasms.”
