Sister Wives star Maddie Brush (née Brown) recalled learning that her family’s “toxic” dynamic wasn’t “normal.”
After reflecting on how people in “toxic” relationships often don’t know they are unhealthy, Maddie, 29, said that many people have that realization when they “become an adult” and “start telling people” about their own experiences.
Maddie then said that she had the realization when she started dating her now-husband, Caleb Brush.
“Poor Caleb. When he came into the family, I’d tell him stories and he’d be like, ‘That’s not normal,’” she recalled during the Monday, November 11, episode of her “The Authentic Society” podcast. “And I think that’s when I first started to be, like, wait a second … this dynamic isn’t so normal.”
Maddie – who is the daughter of Janelle Brown and Kody Brown – also opened up about her estranged relationship with her father during the podcast.
“I’m a straight shooter. You ask me a question, I’m going to tell you what I think. And [my dad] would get very angry when I would be like, ‘I don’t know why you’re surprised here,’” the reality star told her cohost, Jayme Byrd. “So that was one of the reasons I went no contact. He didn’t like a mirror being held up.”
She went on to share examples of conversations she would have with Kody, 55. “[I’d say], ‘In my opinion, there’s a lot of anger,’ and he’d be like, ‘That’s not true,’” Maddie said. “I’m like, ‘It is true. I know this firsthand.’ And there’s other people that are the same. They’d ask for my opinion and I’d express my opinion and they’d get angry.”
After noting that she doesn’t agree with people who try to tell her that “blood is thicker than water,” she argued that “some people just don’t deserve to be in your life.”
“I always get messages from people who are like, ‘You should just forgive your dad and respect him.’ And I’m like … I don’t think you know what you’re talking about,” Maddie continued. “Because your experience with your dad could be very different than my experience with my dad. He doesn’t have any respect for my boundaries. You have to play by his rules. And I just don’t care to do that.”
While Kody has issues with many of his adult children, his troubles with Maddie have been a focal point of season 19. During the October 6 episode, Kody claimed that Maddie spread “gossip about [him] to the rest of the family.”
Janelle, 55, then weighed in on the drama by siding with Maddie. “Kody has this narrative about Madison where she’s such [a] gossip, but he is as big of a gossip,” the mother of six said.
After the episode aired, Maddie has shared several cryptic posts that seemingly refer to the drama with her dad. Meanwhile, Kody complained that Maddie didn’t tell her when she was pregnant with baby No. 3 during the November 3 episode.
Season 19 was filmed in 2022, and Maddie and Caleb, 37, welcomed daughter Josephine in February 2023. The couple announced that they’re expanding their family with baby No. 4 in September.
