The New York Mets have spent more money than any other MLB club this winter after finishing the 2024 season two wins shy of the World Series. President of baseball operations David Stearns has more work to do on his roster. Will one of his next moves involve re-signing homegrown slugger Pete Alonso?
New York's biggest acquisition of the offseason involved landing outfielder Juan Soto. His presence makes the Mets' lineup much better, but the left-handed slugger could use some protection. After all, Soto slugged a career-high 41 home runs in 2024 with Aaron Judge typically stepping up to the plate immediately after him.
Alonso is the most logical solution in this case for the Mets. While the four-time All-Star is only open to signing a short-term deal to remain in Queens, Just Baseball's Ryan Finkelstein thinks Alonso and the Mets meet in the middle to get something done.
"The Mets landed the biggest fish on the market when they signed Juan Soto, but where does that leave their own biggest free agent? Pete Alonso is still on the market and the Mets have yet to replace him in free agency or on the trade market," Finkelstein wrote. "A return still seems like it could be in the cards, and his market has not really revealed itself otherwise. For now, we will keep him going back to New York."
Despite multiple updates regarding potential landing spots and contracts for other top free agents, Finkelstein still thinks the Mets will re-sign Alonso on a six-year, $140 million deal. That would seemingly be between the reported $90 million offer from New York and the $158 million extension Alonso rejected in June 2023.
