An American TV star has died at the age of 71 after suffering "complications" from a stroke and spinal cord injury.
Michael Kelcourse, who was known for his role as Patricia Altschul's butler on Bravo reality series Southern Charm, passed away in Sarasota, Florida, on October 22. Michael suffered an acute spinal stroke in February 2021 and remained paralysed from the chest down.
He was forced to stop working for Patricia and was unable to continue his duties, including making his signature martinis, due to his health condition. He relocated to an assisted living facility in Florida but remained positive despite his condition, said his friend Luzanne Otte.
Sadly, she revealed that at the beginning of October, Michael suffered another stroke which left his right side paralysed and meant he was no longer able to speak. However, she said his mental faculties "remained intact" in his final weesk and he was able to read the "kind words written by hundreds of beloved fans in birthday cards."
Luzanne wrote on Caring Bridge: "It is with a heavy heart that I share Michael Kelcourse died on October 22 in Sarasota, Florida due to complications related to a spinal cord injury and stroke. In the years following Michael's February 2021 spinal stroke, he remained extraordinarily good natured about the cruel twist of fate."

It paralyzed his right side and without the ability to speak. His left hand and mental faculties remained intact. In Michael's final week, he was surrounded by loved ones reading the kind words written by hundreds of beloved fans in birthday cards. Thank you to all who took the time to raise him up in prayer and kindness. What greater gift than to die knowing you are loved and your life will be remembered."
After Michael's death, his co-star Patricia wrote on Instagram: "It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Michael, who left us yesterday morning in Sarasota. More than just a devoted butler, he was a trusted friend, confidant, and member of our family for over 20 years.
"Michael's time on Southern Charm endeared him to many, as his humor and kindness quickly made him a fan favorite. Over the past two weeks, he was deeply touched by the incredible number of cards and well-wishes from fans. I've been told there were hundreds, and they brought him immense joy during his final days. I will be devoting this week to remembering Michael. I know he meant so much to so many of you, as he did to us. He will be greatly missed." Michael had been Patricia's butler for a total of 18 years before his health deteriorated."
Many fans paid tribute to Michael after his death as one wrote: "Michael ignited a passion for gin-only cocktails for my house and I think about him every Friday evening when sipping my 'medicine'." Another said: "So sorry for your loss. Thank you for letting Michael into our lives via the show. He will be remembered fondly."
One more commented: "My deepest condolences to you and his family. What a wonderful soul he was." A fan added: "So sorry to hear this Pat. I think that he went far beyond working for you, the friendship you shared was one to be admired. His level of service loyalty and excellence was inspiring. May he rest in peace I know he will be sorely missed by so many. And I cannot be the only one who every time I have a martini, which is not very often I actually always think of Michael serving you yours."
