A bizarre and abrupt issue has broken Spotify support on Google Nest and Google Home speakers for many users.
Spotify has supported Google Cast and both Nest and Home speakers for years now, usually without any problems, but some users have noticed as of late that this has stopped working.
The issue was first highlighted by many on Reddit (via Android Authority), but we quickly found many more reports on Google’s forums, all within the past day. These user reports are on varying devices, with many mentioning the Nest Mini in particular (likely as it’s one of Google’s most popular devices).
The root cause of the issue seems to be a Spotify update behind the scenes which prevented music from playing, even if the app on your phone said it was. Whatever the problem was, some users have found that the issue has resolved itself in the time since. We’ve also able to use Spotify with Google Home and Nest devices we’ve tested this morning.
Google and Spotify never fully acknowledged the issue, beyond support recommending resets or reinstallations. Those troubleshooting steps weren’t helpful for those affected.
