A major character from Euphoria won’t be returning for the long-awaited third season.

Storm Reid, who plays Gia, the sister of Zendaya‘s character Rue Bennett, confirmed she wouldn’t be back for Season 3 of the HBO series.

“I’m very excited for Season 3,” she told Rotten Tomatoes on the Governors Awards red carpet on November 17. “Unfortunately, Gia’s not returning to the third season, but I am so so indebted to the cast and the crew of that show, to HBO. Euphoria’s a really special thing and I’m so glad that that’s a part of my legacy and that I was a part of such a cultural phenomenon … I can’t wait to see what Season 3 has in store.”

It’s unclear why the show won’t be including Storm’s character, however, it’s reported that the series will be aging up the characters for the third season, and may focus more heavily on Zendaya’s journey as well as the main cast, such as Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Alexa Demie and Maude Apatow.

Production on Season 3 will reportedly begin in January 2025, three years after Season 2 premiered. The third season has faced several delays in production, from actor’s and writer’s strikes, along with aligning the schedules of the show’s star-studded cast as well the series creator, Sam Levinson.

In an interview with Vanity Fair from November 2024, Zendaya confirmed that despite earlier reports that it was her booked schedule causing delays of the third season, that that was not the case.

“I will say, I have been off for a couple years, so not delayed because of my…I’ve been open, just waiting,” she explained. “[Euphoria] is slated for January, I believe. I haven’t read anything yet, but I’m excited to see what everyone has been working on, and what the future looks like for Euphoria.”

She continued, “I don’t really have much of an answer except for right now it’s set to start shooting in January. My most important thing is to do justice by the people who love and care about Rue, and make sure that she’s looked after as a character. I think that’s my number one duty.”
