Taylor Swift recently raised a few eyebrows among fans by skipping the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards to watch her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, play for the Kansas City Chiefs. Swift, who had a strong showing at the EMAs, winning four out of her seven nominations, shared a prerecorded acceptance speech for her best video win with Post Malone.
She told fans she was "so sad" not to be there, though it soon became clear she was instead in Kansas City, cheering on the Chiefs as they edged out the Denver Broncos 16-14.
"Hey guys, it's Taylor. I am coming to you from the Eras Tour. I'm so sad that I can't be with you tonight but thank you so much for these amazing awards," she said in the video.
"The fact that you have honoured the tour, everything that has happened with the album this year, the video, it's just unbelievable.
"Thank you to the fans for voting on this. You're the reason any great thing happens to me and I know it every single day. I'm so thankful for it and this is just so exciting and so wonderful.
"I had the best time touring in Europe this summer so it is just wonderful for you to do this."
Fan reaction to Swift's absence
Fans playfully joked about Swift's priorities, especially since she's currently on a short break from her Eras Tour, which resumes soon in Toronto and concludes in Vancouver in December.
"no I get her and she deserves the rest during her break but lying on international tv even tho people will know where she is is [sic] hilarious," an X user noted.
Another added: "'I'm so sad I can't be with you tonight' THIS LIAR."
During the game, Swift enthusiastically supported Kelce as he made history by tying Tony Gonzalez's franchise record for touchdown receptions.
