Taylor Swift's Ex-Boyfriend Joe Alwyn Has a Blunt Message For Anyone Discussing Their Relationship

Joe Alwyn doesn't need to “move on” from his former relationship with Taylor Swift. According to British actor, he's not the one holding on.

On January 5, The Guardian released a new interview with Alwyn, the 33-year-old British actor known for roles in The Favourite and Conversations With Friends, but perhaps better recognized for his six-year relationship with Taylor Swift—a relationship that allegedly inspired multiple breakup songs on The Tortured Poets Department and earned Alwyn a Grammy for his contributions to Swift's 2020 album, Folklore.

“Lockdown was a whole host of surprises and that was pretty special,” Alwyn told The Guardian. “That was not something I would have foreseen.”

A year after their mysterious breakup in spring 2023, Alwyn deftly avoided discussing their split during his Kinds of Kindness press tour. “I understand people’s curiosity,” Alwyn told The Sunday Times in June 2024. “I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years. That is a hard thing to navigate."

Seven months later, Joe Alwyn managed to remain diplomatic during his chat with The Guardian writer Tim Lewis. When asked if he was ever concerned his relationship with Taylor Swift would “overshadow” his acting career, the Brit said he's always tried to “ignore” the public's interpretations of his personal life.

“I have tried just to focus on controlling what I can control,” he responded. “And, right from the beginning, tried to focus on the things that are meaningful for me: friends, family, work, of course. So noise outside of that, I think I’ve done what lots of people who find themselves in the public eye do, which is just try and ignore it. If you don’t, and if you let all of that other stuff in, and if it starts to affect you and your behavior, you’re living from the outside in. And then you’re pretty fucked.”

After Lewis suggested Alwyn “must just want to move on” from that period of his life, the actor had a pretty blunt response. “That’s something for other people to do,” he said. “We’re talking about something that’s a while ago now in my life. So that’s for other people. That’s what I feel.”

With Taylor Swift well into her relationship with three-time Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce and Joe Alwyn reportedly “dating and happy,” there doesn't seem to be much left to discuss.
