The Flash Director Andy Muschietti Says Shadow of the Colossus Movie Is Not 'An Abandoned Project'

Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, IT, and DC Studios' next Batman movie, still wants to adapt Shadow of the Colossus into a feature film. The Argentine director was set to direct a film adaptation of the PS2 video game in 2014, but Sony Pictures has not provided any updates on the project's development since.

Speaking on the La Baulera del Coso podcast on Radio TU (via ReConectados), Muschietti expressed his continued interest in directing Shadow of the Colossus.

"I'm not a big gamer, but Shadow of the Colossus seems to me a masterpiece and I played it several times," said Muschietti (translated via DeepL). "The movie has been in development for 10 years and now the possibility of making it opens up."

While it may seem like the project was canceled, Muschietti says that's not the case. According to him, the Shadow of the Colossus film is not "an abandoned project, far from it".

"I love this film, there is a script that I like a lot, but there are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and desire to make it, but with how popular an intellectual property like this is".

Muschietti said that he has been facing difficulties securing a high budget for the film, expressing concern about the IP's popularity in the modern day. Sony Interactive Entertainment has never revealed exact sales figures for the three versions of Shadow of the Colossus.

The game was originally released in 2005 for the PS2, then remastered for the PS3. Most recently, Sony published a remake of the game developed by Bluepoint Games for the PS4 in 2018.

"Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but to make a film well there is a studio that puts the numbers and says how much it is interesting to give the director 200, 150 or 100 million dollars," added Muschietti.

"There are different versions of the film and obviously I want them to give me 200 million, but this is another factor to take into account".

Muschietti is directing multiple episodes, including the pilot, of IT: Welcome to Derry, which premieres on Max in 2025. Following that, he's also set to helm The Brave and the Bold, a Batman film set in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe.
