Sometimes you watch a trailer and think “Yeah, I’d like to see that right freaking now.” That’s about to happen to you with the new trailer for Ash, the latest film from director and Grammy award-winning producer Flying Lotus. Eiza González (3 Body Problem) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) star and if you love sci-fi with lots of colors, cool technology, weird creatures, and a whole lot of mystery, this is going to be right up your alley.
Ash will have its world premiere at South by Southwest in Austin later this year before opening everywhere on March 21. Check out the new trailer and then we can discuss a bit after.
What makes Ash so intriguing is that the setup is instantly familiar. An amalgamation of a bunch of things we’ve seen before— desert island, mysterious stranger, amnesia, etc.—just with a few new twists. González’s character Riya wakes up on a mysterious planet with little to no memory of how she got there or why she’s there. A stranger named Brion (Paul) soon arrives and says he’s a friend but we don’t know that. He could be telling the truth, or he might very well be the person who did all this to her.
And around all of it, you’ve got lots of snazzy gadgets, gorgeous visuals, and creepy beings. Basically, the movie looks like everything we love about science fiction all rolled into one. Now, will the movie live up to those expectations? We’ll find out in the coming weeks once it screens in public at South by Southwest. But for now, we’re choosing to be optimistic and hoping that Ash delivers the kinds of thrills, chills, and spills we love in our sci-fi.
