Threads is adding another highly-requested element, with Threads chief Adam Mosseri today announcing that all users will soon have a dedicated “Media” tab on their profiles.
As you can see in this example, Threads is adding the “Media” tab, which will display all of the photos and videos that you’ve posted to the app.
Which X already has, and Bluesky added this week. So really, this is just catching up to the functionality of competitor apps. But still, it’s been a much-requested element, and the Threads team is working to build in all that it can to capitalize on its opportunities.
Which it is seemingly doing.
Yesterday, as part of Meta’s Q4 2024 earnings call, Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads is now up to 320 million active users, rising from 300 million just six weeks ago.
That means that Threads is gaining growth momentum, and maintaining a steady flow of interest, as it continues to expand.
Of course, a lot of these users are Twitter cast-offs looking for a new, Elon-free home base. In that sense, the success of Threads can’t entirely be attributed to the platform itself. But again, Threads is keeping people around, and adding more, and if it can continue on this pace, it will become a bigger consideration within the social media landscape.
I mean, Zuckerberg’s still talking about the app becoming the next billion-user platform, so he’s clearly got faith in the project, and there is a good chance that Threads will supersede X as the key real-time platform of choice sometime this year.
And while Meta’s moderation changes, in getting rid of third-party fact-checkers, and allowing more political content, haven’t seemed overly popular, they could benefit Threads specifically. The app has struggled amid breaking news events due to its restrictions on what people can discuss, but now, with those limitations removed, Threads could be more open to real-time, live engagement.
That could be a big step in winning over key X communities, like those built around live sport and TV shows. If Threads can lure them across, it could see a rapid rise in usage, and could quickly overtake X in pure user counts.
Which would be somewhat ironic, in that Meta’s adopting X’s Community Notes approach, which Elon Musk has pushed as the best way forward. If that then enables Meta to beat X, that’ll no doubt stick in Musk’s craw.
In addition to the media tab, Mosseri has also confirmed that post mark-up is now rolling out to all users, as well as the ability to tag users in photos.
