Three Southern States Under Cold Weather Advisories Amid Historic Storm

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for parts of Alabama, Georgia and Florida for Thursday evening into Friday morning amid a historic storm to hit the southern states.

Why It Matters

The southern United States has seen record-breaking amounts of snow this week, and the cold weather is staying for the time being in portions of southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia, Big Bend and Panhandle Florida.

The NWS warned that the expected wind chill and frigid temperatures could lead to hypothermia if exposed to the outdoor weather for a prolonged time.

The NWS warned of wind chills as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit in impacted areas.

Alabama

The NWS issued a Cold Weather Advisory Thursday morning for Coffee, Dale, Henry, Geneva and Houston counties. The advisory will remain in place from 8 p.m. Eastern Time/7 p.m. Central Time on Thursday evening to 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on Friday.

Georgia

The NWS issued a Cold Weather Advisory Thursday morning for Quitman, Clay, Randolph, Terrell, Dougherty, Lee, Worth, Turner, Early, Miller, Baker, Mitchell, Seminole, Decatur and Grady counties. The advisory will remain in place from 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Thursday evening to 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on Friday.

Florida

The NWS issued a Cold Weather Advisory Thursday morning for Walton, Holmes, Washington, Jackson, Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Franklin, Gadsden, Leon, Liberty and Wakulla counties. The advisory will remain in place from 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Thursday evening to 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on Friday.

The NWS issues a Cold Weather Advisory when seasonably cold air temperatures or wind chill values are occurring or expected.

The National Weather Service (NWS), on Thursday: "Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water."

The weather service advised frequently checking on older loved ones and neighbors and exercising fire safety, such as ensuring portable heaters are used correctly and not using generators or grills inside your home.

What Happens Next

Temperatures in portions of Alabama, Georgia and Florida impacted by this Cold Weather Advisory will rise above freezing by Friday midmorning, the National Weather Service Tallahassee, Florida office told Newsweek on Thursday.

Friday will see highs in the mid-to-upper 40s across the affected area and residents should be out of this cold spill by the end of the weekend with highs in the upper 50s, according to the Tallahassee office.
