The St. Louis Cardinals are open to trading their star third baseman Nolan Arenado this winter. Arenado is a six-time Platinum Glove winner, solidifying himself as one of the greatest infield defenders to ever play the game. But it's going to be tough to find a suitor for him because of the $52 million left on his contract.
MLB Network's Jon Morosi thinks the Cardinals could find a perfect fit for Arenado with the Detroit Tigers, given the Tigers' willingness to buy this winter.
"The Tigers, known to be seeking right-handed bats, are one possible fit on an Arenado trade. His willingness to play 1B, per Katie's report, is appealing," Morosi wrote in a post to X/Twitter. "The Tigers likely would ask for cash to be included in deal, given size of Arenado's contract."
I don't understand why everybody seems to want to move Arenado off third base. He won ten consecutive Gold Glove awards from 2013 to 2022 and has been an elite defender over the last two years as well. If a team trades for Arenado, it should find a place to move its incumbent third baseman, not Arenado.
Either way, the fit in Detroit makes sense. The Tigers need a right-handed bat, an infielder, and veteran leadership. Arenado is all three of those things wrapped up into one $52 million player.
Detroit would just need the Tigers to eat half his contract and the two sides could likely make a deal happen.
