Tigers Rumors: Bad News For Detroit's Alex Bregman Free Agency Pursuit

3 hours ago 2

Alex Bregman and the Detroit Tigers reportedly aren't close to a deal.

Bregman, arguably the best hitter left in free agency, has been connected to the Tigers, Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox, among others. The veteran infielder reportedly isn't interested in signing a short-term deal, although he might not have another choice.

On Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press provided an update on the Bregman-Tigers negotiations.

"The Detroit Tigers remain interested," Petzold wrote, "but negotiations are at a standstill with less than one month until the first full-squad workout in spring training, according to a source with knowledge of the situation."

Obviously, things can change, but at this juncture, Bregman appears unlikely to land in Detroit.

Multiple recent reports -- including one questionable rumor -- indicate the Red Sox are the frontrunners to land Bregman. However, it's unclear whether Boston would sign Bregman to play third base, his primary position, or move him to second base, where he'd force top prospect Kristian Campbell to the outfield. In the former scenario, the Red Sox also could move Rafael Devers to first base and trade Triston Casas.

Bregman, who'll turn 31 in March, hit .260 with 26 homers and a .768 OPS in 145 games for the Houston Astros last season. He also won his first American League Gold Glove Award at third base.
