Tony Slattery's final post as Whose Line Is It Anyway? star dies

Comedian Tony Slattery reflected on his "wonderful year" in his final social media post before his death aged 65.

The Whose Line Is It Anyway? star died following a heart attack as his partner of almost 40 years Mark Michael Hutchinson issued a statement. It said: “It is with great sadness we must announce actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, has passed away today, Tuesday morning, following a heart attack on Sunday evening.”

He was also known for comedy shows Just A Minute and Have I Got News For You. Tony was last seen in an Instagram post shared on Christmas Day as he shared a message to his followers. He wore a blue striped shirt and tinsel decorated in holly leaves around his neck.

Tony said: "Hello everyone who is watching this, Tony Slattery here. President of the Rambling Club. We have had a wonderful year and it's thanks to you, the listeners and also the Patreon people who keep us going. We are growing exponentially and we love doing it. This is just to say thank you and Merry Christmas.

"Oh and the guests we've had on. We've had on Hacker the dog, which was hilarious, Julian Carey from who I have borrowed this [he shook his tinsel]. He is in panto but spared it for me. We have got lots of really interesting guests lined up but we will keep that secret for now."

He added: "Quality guests, that's what we offer. We offer existential conversations and good humour. This is just to say to you all a big thank you, we love the fact that you are listening to us and we are helping to bring peace and love to the world. And humour, god knows we need it more than ever. Have a very Merry Christmas and a really healthy, happy new year."

Tony launched his podcast, Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club, in October and had recently been touring a comedy show in England. He is survived by his partner of more than three decades, the actor Mark Michael Hutchinson. They met while performing in Me and My Girl in the mid-80s.

Speaking in 2019, while discussing his past addictions and his bipolar diagnosis, Tony said of his partner: "He’s kept with me when my behaviour has been so unreasonable and I can only think it’s unconditional love. He’s certainly not with me for my money – we don’t have any money. It’s the mystery of love. I’m sorry – it makes me very emotional."

In the same interview with the Guardian, Tony expressed a wish to make it to his 60th birthday. When the interviewer pointed out his milestone birthday was just months away, the comic replied: " A lot can happen between now and then." After reaching 60, Tony bravely discussed his childhood abuse, battle with bipolar disorder and addiction in a BBC mental health film, What's The Matter With Tony Slattery?

The star revealed he had been abused aged eight by a priest and gave harrowing details of his childhood torment in the film - which explored the link between mental health and childhood abuse. A year later, Tony shared how he went bankrupt following a battle with substance abuse and mental health issues.
