2024 was a record-breaking year in Hollywood. In this feature we're listing the top ten biggest-earners.
They range from $451m at number ten, to the top spot with a whopping $1.7 billion. Genres span legacy sequels, to '80s hits, to R-rated superhero films, to animated family adventures.
In at number one is Inside Out 2, which is perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the year. Released in June, Disney and Pixar's heartfelt animated comedy is now the 8th highest-grossing film of all time, and surpassed The Lion King to become the highest-grossing animated film ever.
It's also the animated film that managed to gross $1 billion worldwide the fastest, comfortably outdoing 2015's predecessor, which earned $858m.
Deadpool and Wolverine is second with $1.34 billion, now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time after surpassing 2019's Joker. Releasing July 2024, it had the highest-grossing opening weekend ever for an R-rated film, and is the eleventh MCU film to gross over $1 billion. It also had the most-viewed trailer of all time, with 36 million views at the time of writing.
Summer this year mixed slapstick ultra-violence with kid-friendly fare, with another massively successful July release in Despicable Me 4 also targeted to younger audiences. It narrowly missed out on making $1 billion, but its $969m total landed it third on the list.
Next at number four is Dune: Part Two with $714.4m. The sci-fi series is now a billion-dollar-grossing franchise, with a confirmed release date of December 18, 2026 for Dune: Part Three. Moana 2 graced the fifth spot with a $600m, the third Disney film in the top five.
