Tyler, The Creator gives fans a look inside the creation of CHROMAKOPIA in a mini-documentary titled MASK IS OFF CHROMAKOPIA. Uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday (Nov. 12), the clip is shot and edited by frequent collaborator Lazaro Rodriguez. At just over six minutes long, the video takes viewers behind the scenes, highlighting the California rapper’s process.
The never-before-seen footage showcases the creation of “I Killed You,” “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” ”Thought I Was Dead,” and “St. Chroma,” as well as Sexyy Red laying down her “Sticky” verse. Additionally, audiences get a glimpse at Lola Young recording for “Like Him.”
Central to the video is of course, Tyler, The Creator as he plays instruments, writes, produces, and performs the work as it goes from creative ideas to reality.
CHROMAKOPIA was issued last month and features not only Sexyy Red and Lola Young but also Lil Wayne, GloRilla, Teezo Touchdown, Daniel Caesar, Doechii, ScHoolboy Q, Santigold, and Latoiya Williams. Solange, WILLOW, Thundercat, Donald Glover, and more all added their talents to the acclaimed album.
“The album just kind of turned into me taking a bunch of sh*t my mom told me when I was a kid. Now that I’m 33, all of that stuff is like, ‘Oh, that’s what f**k she was talking about! Oh, I’m not the guy that I was at 20! Oh sh*t!’” he explained to a crowd of fans at an exclusive listening event ahead of CHROMAKOPIA‘s release.
“People are getting older. Folks having kids and families. And all I got is a new Ferrari and it does feel kind of weird after a while. I’m gaining weight. I got a grey hair on my chest.”
Despite a Monday drop, CHROMAKOPIA debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s 200 chart, where it remains for the second week in a row on the chart dated for the week ending Saturday (Nov. 16). Additionally, “Sticky” has reached the top 10 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, moving up from its debut at No. 14.
Taking the top of the charts, the album counted 299,500 album-equivalent units earned in the U.S. in its first week of tracking, with a total of 142,000 counted as pure album sales, and 66,000 in vinyl sales, marking Tyler, the Creator’s best week ever on vinyl, and the third-biggest debut week on vinyl for a rap album since Luminate began tracking sales in 1991.
