A little over six months after its launch, Ubisoft has announced that it will shut down XDefiant, its free-to-play first-person shooter, in 2025. The game, according to Ubisoft, amassed over fifteen million players in its lifetime but continued to struggle in a competitive market, especially following the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
With so many live service shooters on the market, like Fortnite and Marvel Rivals, it was hard for XDefiant to carve out a unique identity.
"We regret to inform you that we are initiating the sunset process starting today, December 3rd, 2024," reads a statement from Ubisoft. "As a result, new downloads, player registrations and purchases will no longer be available. Season 3 will still launch, so stay tuned for more updates to come. The servers will remain active, and the game will be fully playable until June 3rd, 2025."
According to games reporter Stephen Totilo, Ubisoft has shut down its studios in San Francisco and Osaka, with over 250 layoffs. The company's Sydney team will also be "ramping down" work, with half of the XDefiant team being shifted to other projects.
Players who purchased the Founders Pack will be refunded the full amount, while others who bought anything from the in-game store in the last thirty days will also get refunds. Here is a list of all eligible items for refund:
- XDefiant Gold Pack
- XDefiant Starter Pack DLC
- XDefiant Combat Pack DLC
- XDefiant VC Pack - 500 XCoins
- XDefiant VC Pack - 1000 XCoins
- XDefiant VC Pack - 2100 XCoins
- XDefiant VC Pack - 5750 XCoins
- XDefiant VC Pack - 12000 XCoins
- Ultimate Founder's Pack
XDefiant's servers will remain active until June 3, 2025, so players can continue to play the game. However, no one will be able to purchase items till then, though you can redeem any remaining XCoins in the market. Being a multiplayer live-service title, there will be no way to access the game in an offline environment following its delisting.
XDefiant is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
