First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. isn't slated to become a free agent until next winter. However, his future with the Toronto Blue Jays could be decided in the coming weeks. Will he stay with the club on a lucrative long-term deal or eventually land with a hated American League East rival?
Guerrero has shared his desires for a new contract with the Blue Jays front office. He's also told them he wants to get something done before spring training starts. If it doesn't happen, Toronto could risk losing him on the open market following the 2025 campaign.
But if the Jays aren't in contention by the trade deadline, could they send him packing for a truckload of prospects? Which potential suitor makes the most sense for the right-handed slugger?
FanSided's Christopher Kline ranked Vlad Jr.'s likeliest trade destinations if things don't work out with Toronto. He put the Boston Red Sox in the top spot.
"The Blue Jays are going to want a major prospect haul in return and the Red Sox are loaded with explosive bats in their farm system, even after the Garrett Crochet trade," Kline wrote. "It also helps, from Guerrero's perspective, that he can join a long tradition of Dominican superstars dominating the hitter-friendly confines of Fenway Park.
"The shadows of David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez still loom large over Fenway. One has to imagine that might give the Red Sox an upper hand in recruiting Guerrero back to Boston once free agency strikes."
Guerrero is estimated to earn $28.8 million in 2025, but he's set himself up for a tremendous payday as a free agent. Spotrac projects his current market value for a long-term deal at 12 years and $427 million.
