Strictly star Wynne Evans has been keeping a low profile after making a crude ‘spit roast’ comment. But what does the phrase mean?

The opera singer, known for the Go Compare ads, landed himself in hot water after making the comment to co-star Janette Manrara during the Strictly Live tour. He was been touring with his professional partner Katya Jones, but was caught making the inappropriate joke during the photocall for the tour launch in Birmingham.

The 52-year-old was given a stern warning by the BBC, which said they "do not tolerate such behaviour".

Wynne has issued an apology, but what does his comment refer to?

According to long-upheld rude word oracle Urban Dictionary, a spit roads is: “Verb: to spit roast. A sexual activity involving 3 people, two active males and one passive (male or female). Man 1 penetrates person 2 from the rear (anal or vaginal) while he/she sucks the penis of person 3.

The alternative definition, including the one given on Google, is: “cook (a piece of meat) on a spit.” We’ll let you decide which one here is relevant.

He has also suffered an ankle injury recently, but has since put out an Instagram video for the first time since he made the comment.

He said: "Ankle's getting a bit better, it was great to be able to sing in Glasgow tonight, even if I couldn't dance, hopefully back tomorrow. But watch this space, I'll let you know in the morning. See how the swelling goes down, and all that kind of stuff, thanks for all the lovely messages, amazing."

The incident is understood to have taken place as as he stood by fellow stars JB Gill, Tasha Ghouri, Shayne Ward, Montell Douglas and Jamie Borthwick.

Host Janette walked over for a promo shot, when Wynne burst into a "Go Compare," tune, cheekily warning: "Not too close to Jamie."

It didn't stop there – he threw in a scandalous "spit roast" jibe at Janette, causing an awkward laugh from the cast.

Wynne later expressed remorse to the Mirror: "My language was inappropriate and unacceptable, for which I sincerely apologise."

BBC Studios also responded, underscoring they'd been clueless about the comment, with a spokesperson saying: "We were not previously aware of the remark and did not receive any complaints. We have made it very clear to Wynne that we do not tolerate such behaviour on the tour."
