Well-kept hands of a certain size can be an indication of beauty, good health and youthfulness. Here we take a look at the 'golden ratio' and some of the celebs who have it.

What is the Golden Ratio?

The Golden Ratio is a system developed by the ancient Greeks to measure physical perfection.

The golden ratio is the ratio of a line segment that has been cut into multiple pieces of varying lengths.

The golden ratio divides any line at 1.618, known as Phi, or the Greek letter ϕ.

It creates a ratio that is proportional to both sides of the dividing line, and is believed to provide the most aesthetically pleasing outcome, whether that is a building design or proportions of someone's hands and feet.

The golden ratio can be applied to fingernails by measuring the sections of an index finger and observing that each section is approximately 1.618 times longer than the previous one.

Speaking to the Mail Online, celebrity nail technician Lucy Tucker has worked out how old these celebs look, just by looking at their hands.

Amanda Holden

Amanda Holden always looks her best on the red carpet and it's no secret that she likes to pay attention to all aspects of her beauty regime.

But Lucy recommends that the BGT judge should use some cream.

Lucy said: "They look a little dry so I would definitely recommend using a good anti-ageing hand cream. 

"Although it’s labelled as a hand cream, I’ve found it’s amazing for nails too and works wonders on strengthening the surface of the nail too."

Jennifer Aniston

Hand age: 39 Real age: 55

Jennifer Aniston always looks youthful and her hands are no different.

Tucker said: "Although her nails look in good condition, they may not be that strong so keeping them short means there’s no risk of breakages on the red carpet.

"I would recommend her keeping them at that length as her nail beds are lovely and healthy-looking cuticles often mean healthy nails."

Fearne Cotton

Fearne Cotton's love for eclectic style carries on to her hands with bold jewellery and bright nails.

Lucy said: "Nails are our complementary accessory so it’s great to make the most of the them.

"Although some of the celebrities I work with like a subtle nail colour for events, it’s always fun to add some bright colour to an outfit."

Keira Knightley loves to keep her nails short which could be a sign of a hectic life.

Lucy said: 'It’s so important to look after your hands from a young age.

"She’s lucky to have nice and supple looking skin, but to keep it like this should think about anti-ageing from within with the right vitamins."
