Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon have been criticised by fans after they agreed on the one thing they would ban from weddings forever: a cash bar.
The Anchorman actor, 57, and the Legally Blonde actress, 48, sat down in an interview together and agreed that wedding guests should never have to pay for alcohol, and asking them to do so was ‘rude’.
When asked the question, ‘What do you wish you could ban from weddings forever?’ Will instantly responded: ‘Cash bar.’
Reese then agreed in the interview with Buzzfeed, saying: ‘That’s not nice, that’s rude. That’s in really poor taste.’
Many people called out the two millionaires for their comments being ‘out of touch’ – as for regular people, putting on a free bar for wedding guests is a huge expense and not something everyone can afford to do.
‘Calling a cash bar rude just shows how rich you are. Having a wedding is celebrating a marriage not free drinks,’ commented TikTok user Katrina85.
LStephen86 said: ‘Hang on, why wouldn’t you pay for drinks you’re buying at a wedding? In UK I’ve never been to one where it’s a free bar. Is this a yank or very rich out of touch person thing?’
‘So if I can’t afford to pay for a full bar service it’s rude?? Cool cool,’ commented Ali.
Tiktokker_123 also asked: ‘Does Will Ferrell really get invited to weddings that have a cash bar?’
‘Tell me you’re out of touch without telling me you’re out of touch,’ said AustinKing.
‘Celebrities complaining about a cash bar is f**king wild,’ said Paseo.
Lots of people also compared the cultural differences of cash bars, with some pointing out that free bars tend to be less common in the UK and Ireland, but can be more regular in the US – depending on the state.
Julian Nava said: ‘I used to live/photograph weddings in Texas and there was always a cash bar, only the $$$ weddings were open. In NYC where I am now, all the weddings I’ve ever shot are open bars!’
Barniclt2gf said: ‘In Ireland, all weddings are cash bars. We’d have to remortgage to pay for everyone’s drinks.’
‘Don’t go to a British wedding then coz we do not have free bars. We would all be bankrupt!’ added FionaLB.
According to Forbes, Reese is worth an estimated $440 million (£354m), while Celebrity Net Worth reckons the Elf actor has $160m (£129m) to keep him going.
The cost of putting on a free bar for an 100-guest wedding could cost you anything from around £1,000, depending on how much your friends and family drink and how long the drinks are free for.
This interview came as Reese and Will are promoting their new film You’re Cordially Invited, which dropped on Amazon Prime on January 30.
It follows Reese as Margot, sister of the bride, and Will playing Jim, the father of another bride.
Unfortunately, the two weddings collide in the same venue in a double-booking of nightmares, and the two sets of family and friends try desperately to make their days work.
The rom-com also stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Celia Weston, Keyla Monterroso and Leanne Morgan.
You can stream You’re Cordially Invited on Amazon Prime Video now.
