11 hours ago 3

Winter weather advisories or winter storm warnings are in place for nine states across the U.S. as of early Tuesday morning, and up to nine inches of snow is forecast by the National Weather Service (NWS) in some parts of the country.

The service advised travelers to be prepared for "rapid changes" in weather, visibility, and road conditions in some instances. It said drivers in affected areas should exercise caution and reduce speed.

What To Know

At the time of writing, states under winter weather advisory included Alaska, Wyoming, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Vermont.

A part of Northwest Michigan was under a winter storm warning.

In Michigan's Houton and Ontonagon Counties, the NWS warned of heavy lake effect snow—which the service says occurs when cold air moves across the open waters of the Great Lakes.

While the amount of snowfall expected varied from state to state, up to nine inches of accumulation was possible in Alaska's Municipality of Skagway and New York's Wayne and Cayuga counties, the NWS said.
