Yak Gotti was stabbed in jail over the weekend.
As first reported by regional outlet WSB-TV, Gotti, real name Deamonte Kendrick, was injured in the incident that took place at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia. When reached for comment by Complex on Monday, a spokesperson for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a “physical altercation” took place on Sunday at the South Annex in Union City.
“Deamonte Kendrick, also known as rapper Yak Gotti, and another jail resident were in a physical altercation on Sunday, December 1,” a department rep said in an email to Complex. “Kendrick received treatment for minor injuries from a sharp object at the Fulton County Jail. The incident occurred at the South Annex in Union City where both men were being housed. Kendrick will be in court today. This is an active investigation to determine the aggressor in this incident and if charges will be pending.”
In a video shared to TikTok, Douglas Weinstein, an attorney for Gotti, said he had briefly spoken with his client on Sunday night.
“He sounded tired when I spoke to him,” Weinstein said, as seen above. “He was at the jail getting ready to be transported to the hospital for some stitches. I don’t know his full medical condition. I don’t know the results of what happened at the hospital. It’s very, very difficult to get information from the hospital on these things.”
Complex has reached out to Weinstein for further comment. This story may be updated.
Gotti is a defendant in the lengthy and frequently criticized YSL Records racketeering trial in Georgia, which previously saw Young Thug being released on a plea deal. Fellow co-defendant Gunna, meanwhile, was released two years prior after opting for an Alford plea. The nature of this plea has been widely misunderstood on social media and beyond, with Gunna himself offering a brief explanation on the circumstances of his release back in December 2022.
“While I have agreed to always be truthful, I want to make it perfectly clear that I have NOT made any statements, have NOT been interviewed, have NOT cooperated, have NOT agreed to testify or be a witness for or against any party in the case and have absolutely NO intention of being involved in the trial process in any way,” Gunna said at the time.
As for Gotti, he has declined to go the plea deal route. Deliberations in the case are slated to pick back up on Monday.
