The Juan Soto sweepstakes is the top story in baseball and it's going to be the top story until Soto signs his monumental contract. The pricetag of his deal has been heavily speculated with predictions as low as $550 million and as high as $700 million.
To this point, it's just been speculation -- what Soto's market value is, what he's worth, and what teams may be willing to pay him. To this point, the known teams to still be in on Soto are the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees.
Now, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has reported Soto's negotiations have cleared the monumental $600 million mark. There's no reason for Soto to sign anything less than that mark.
"The floor for Juan Soto is $600 million. The bidding for the free-agent MLB outfielder has surpassed that amount, according to two people briefed on the negotiations who were not authorized to speak publicly," Rosenthal wrote. "The two people briefed on the negotiations said that all remaining contenders have made offers above $600 million. The expectation within the industry is that Soto will make his decision by the end of the Winter Meetings, which begin in Dallas on Sunday, and possibly even before the meetings kick off."
This shouldn't come as a surprise. It was never a true reality that Soto could sign for anything less than the $600 million mark.
Now is when teams will start hitting their ceilings with him. It's hard to imagine the bidding will actually reach $700 million, but if the interest at $600 million is as high as it sounds, I wouldn't count any figure out at this point.
